How do you read decimal odds?
Odds of 1.50 mean that each unit staked returns 1.50 units in total if an ordinary bet wins. One unit is your original stake and half a unit is profit. The figure does not mean your net profit is one and a half times your stake.
These examples use the same hypothetical stake of 10 units, without fees or bonus conditions:
| Odds | Total return | Net profit |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | 15 | 5 |
| 2.00 | 20 | 10 |
| 3.00 | 30 | 20 |
If the selection loses in any of these examples, the loss is 10 units regardless of the odds. Higher odds increase the return conditional on winning; they do not automatically increase the chance of winning.
How do you convert odds into implied probability?
Implied probability (%) = 100 ÷ decimal odds
- 100 ÷ 1.50 ≈ 66.67%.
- 100 ÷ 2.00 = 50%.
- 100 ÷ 3.00 ≈ 33.33%.
It is called implied probability because it is derived from the price. Bookmaker prices incorporate a margin and may change with new information and market management. These percentages should therefore not be presented as certain measurements of the true probabilities.
Even if we assume a genuine probability of 50%, that does not require exactly one win and one loss in every two attempts. Runs of similar outcomes can occur.
Do odds of 1.20 mean a guaranteed bet?
No. A stake of 10 units at 1.20 produces only 2 units of profit if it wins, while a loss costs 10 units. With equal stakes, one loss cancels the profits from five winning bets at those odds.
This calculates the financial effect; it does not predict how often you will win. There is no universal rule that odds above a particular number are good. Assessing a price requires understanding the probability and the market conditions.
Why do odds change?
Prices may change after team news or an injury, during a match as the score and remaining time change, or when market assessments shift. Shorter odds indicate different pricing, not an announcement that the outcome has been decided.
When reading a slip in 1xBet or another interface, distinguish the price displayed now from the odds recorded on a previously accepted bet. Check the acceptance and settlement rules if the figures differ.
Worked exercise: 20 units at odds of 1.50
The total winning return is 20 × 1.50 = 30 units. Net profit is 30 − 20 = 10 units. The implied probability is approximately 66.67%, but it does not guarantee the outcome.
Can I calculate the market margin from one price?
No. You need the prices of all mutually exclusive outcomes covering the same market. The next step is calculating the bookmaker’s overround.
